Bondall Textured Effects

Bondall Textured Effects is a waterborne modified acrylic coating with high adhesion and strength, high water repellence.

For use on planters, garden features, terra cotta clay pots and broad wall surfaces for both exterior and interior conditions to give a decorative textured effect.

Can be used on cementitious surfaces, such as fibro-cement board, bricks, concrete, glass, Besser blocks or plasterboard.

It may be applied to firm acrylic pre-coated surfaces. For limestone or sandstone surfaces it is better to apply an acrylic sealer first to stabilise the soft or crumbling surface. Leave sealed surfaces to dry for 24hrs before coating.

Surface Preparation

Ensure the surface is clean, without dust, dirt, oil, grease or other contaminants. The surface can be slightly damp but not sat- urated or glistening wet just before coating. The damper the surface the more rounded the relief due to longer drying time.

If a brush cannot penetrate the material in the can easily, then the coating could be difficult to apply due to poor surface wet- ting. If the material has thickened to a stiff gel on storage, stir slowly with a broad palette knife to reduce viscosity. Stirring too fast will lead to temporary loss of textured effects, resulting in a relatively smooth surface.

TEST AREA Always test on a small inconspicuous area to ensure that the product is achieving the desired result, prior to application over the whole area.

Applications

Brush, fine or coarse textured roller, or flat pad short bristle applicator can be used. Generally two coats are applied. Apply the first coat by brush or flat pad short bristle applicator to get good coverage of the surface. A fine textured roller generally gives a more pleasing fine relief than a coarse textured roller, which gives a more rounded relief. Increase the rate of rolling or remix if the viscosity needs to be reduced.

On smooth surfaces such as glass or plaster, the first coat when dried creates a friction surface with low coverage. The second coat is easier to coat over the first coat due to increased friction. If using a textured roller for the first coat, there may be low friction initially until some of the material has dried.

The surface may be coated smooth and left to dry or made coarse immediately with a second coat by stippling with the end of a brush or dabbing with a slightly loaded flat pad to raise the relief. Higher relief is obtained by minimal working of the second coat. Initially the first coat can be coated uni-directionally for a smooth coat, which gives the maximum coverage.

The amount of loading on the pad determines the amount of relief or stipple. Excess loading of the brush or pad or excessive working of the same area on the second coat leads to a more rounded finish. The material will show the brushstrokes; so inter- esting patterns can be introduced with the second coat eg. Crow's feet, swirls, arcs, chevrons etc.

Thinning

Do not thin with water as this may lead to permanent loss of the textured effects.

Coverage

Typically 2 square metres per litre, but it may vary 1.5 – 2.5 square metres per litre according to height of relief. Generally two coats are recommended to ensure the colour of the substrate does not show through and to create the textured pattern desired.

Drying Time

Drying time depends on weather conditions and the absorbency of the substrate. At 25°C 50% RH on fibro-cement board the first coat can be over coated after 1-2 hours. The coating dries hard in about 24 hours. If the surface is saturated or very damp the drying time for over coating could be doubled. On highly absorbent surfaces such as limestone or sandstone a primer coat is recommended to reduce the drying time, otherwise the coating may be still soft days or weeks later depending on the degree of saturation.

Clean Up

Wash equipment out whilst wet with water and detergent. Do not pour washings down sink or drains. Dispose of all containers in accordance with local council regulations.

Precautions/ First Aid

It is recommended that normal personal protective clothing should be worn, including coveralls, impervious gloves and goggles. Avoid unnecessary skin contact and inhalation – use a suitable respirator if spray application is employed.

If swallowed, contact a doctor or the Poison Information Centre on 13 11 26. Give water to drink and do not induce vomiting.
