APPLYING ONTO UNTREATED TIMBER DECKING

Product: Monocel Decking Oil

Surface Preparation:

Surface preparation is important. All surfaces should be dry, finely sanded and free from dust, grease, grime, wax, oil, mild dew, fungi and algae. Any previously applied paint, varnish, shellac etc, must be removed before coating.

Allow all new decking to age and weather for at least 6-8 weeks prior to applying Monocel Decking Oil.Wash down frequently with water during this period.this will assist in leaching out the tannins in the timber. If new decking is not weathered an uneven or blotchy finish may result.

IMPORTANT: to allow proper penertration, some timber such as Merbau, may require additional weathering and/or cleaning. Allow to dry throughly before coating.

Applications:

  • Stir well before and during use. DO NOT SHAKE CAN. Use a 25mm broad timber or metal paddle and stir for 5 min. Apply Monocel Decking Oil with a good quality soft, clean paintbrush, applicator pad, short nap roller or by low preasure spray. If large areas are to be coated we recommend the use of a short nap mohair roller to assist with application.
  • The first coat should be allowed to dry for a minimum of 4 hours before lightly sanding the surface with 240 grit sandpaper. Thoroughly dust the surface (a tack rag is recommended).
  • Application of 2 coats is recommended for best results. On dense / oily timbers 1 coat may be sufficient. Timber should be tested to determine the suitable number of coats. Monocel Decking Oil should not be applied over painted surfaces. Reapply as timber changes colour or decreased water repellency is observed.
  • Do not apply if temperature is below 10 ºC or if rain is expected within 24 hours.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation during use.
